Most new lawns that fail were not bad sod. They were laid on bad prep. Before you hire anyone around Charlotte, ask these questions.
- Will you remove the old lawn, or lay over it? Sod laid over old grass and weeds roots poorly.
- What soil prep is included? Ask how much soil is brought in and whether grading is part of the price.
- Do you fix the grade? Water should drain away from your house.
- What grass are you installing, and why that one for my yard? A good installer asks about sun and shade first.
- How fresh is the sod? Sod should be laid within a day or two of delivery (Clemson HGIC, Lawn Establishment).
- Do I get watering instructions in writing?
- Do you come back to check on it?
- Is the quote written, line by line? You should be able to see what is and is not included.
Red flags
- A price over the phone without anyone looking at the yard.
- No mention of soil prep.
- Pressure to sign the same day.
How we do it
We measure your yard from satellite, send a written quote that spells out the prep, cut out the old lawn, fix the grade, lay the sod and water it in, then leave a written watering guide.
